Photostability: why some SPF fades in the sun

You put your SPF on in the morning and assume it is still doing its job at lunch. Usually it is. But some sunscreens quietly lose strength while you sit in the sun, and that has nothing to do with wiping your face or sweating it off.

That is what photostability means. Here is what it is, why it matters for your skin, and how mineral and chemical filters really differ.

What photostability means

A UV filter works by catching sunlight before it reaches your skin. Catching it costs the filter something. Some filters take the hit, shake it off and carry on. Others slowly fall apart, and once they do, they stop catching anything.

A photostable filter keeps working while the sun is on it. A less stable one gives you the protection on the label at nine in the morning and rather less of it by eleven.

Why it matters

Because you cannot feel it happen. No sting, no shine, nothing that tells you the layer has weakened. You reapply on a schedule or when you remember, and in between you assume the number on the bottle is what you have.

SPF is measured in a lab on fresh product, before the sun has done anything to it. It is a starting figure. Photostability decides how close you stay to it an hour later.

Mineral or chemical?

This is the split most people know, so it is worth being straight about it.

Mineral filters, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, do not break down in sunlight. On stability alone they are simple and dependable. What people tend to dislike is the finish: a white cast, a heavier feel, and more visible on deeper skin tones.

Chemical filters are more interesting, because they are not one group. Avobenzone, the classic UVA filter and the most used one in the world, is genuinely unstable on its own and needs a partner ingredient to hold it together. A newer generation of European filters was designed the other way round, with stability as the starting point, and those hold up on their own.

So mineral against chemical is the wrong question to end on. Which chemical filter is the question that actually tells you something.

How to check your own bottle

  1. Find the UV filters. They sit near the top of the ingredient list.
  2. Look for Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane. That is avobenzone.
  3. If it is there, check whether Octocrylene is there too. That is the ingredient that keeps avobenzone stable, so seeing it is reassuring.
  4. If you see zinc oxide, or long names ending in triazine or triazone, stability is already handled.

What this means for Daily Defense

Daily Defense is a broad-spectrum SPF 30 moisturiser, and its filters are the modern, photostable kind: Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Ethylhexyl Triazone and Tris-Biphenyl Triazine. There is no avobenzone in it, so nothing in the formula depends on a second ingredient to keep working through your morning.

It also means no white cast, which is what you would normally trade away to get mineral-level stability.

What photostability does not fix

A stable filter still comes off. It transfers onto your collar, goes with sweat, and rubs away when you touch your face. Reapplying every two hours in real sun still matters. So does using enough of it in the first place, and most people use far less than the amount SPF is tested with. We wrote about that in SPF 30 or 50.

Questions we get

Is mineral the safer choice then?

On stability, it is the simple one. A modern photostable chemical filter gets you to the same place without the white cast, so it comes down to which finish you prefer.

Should I avoid octocrylene?

Next to avobenzone it is doing useful work. A small number of people react to it on the skin, and if that is you, you will know. For everyone else its presence is a good sign.

Can I tell from the SPF number?

No. A high SPF built on an unstable filter and a lower SPF built on stable ones are not comparable after an hour outside. The number and the stability are separate things.

Does my sunscreen go off faster because of this?

No. This happens on your skin while you are in the sun, not in the bottle in your cupboard.
