
Hyaluronic acid: why it sometimes leaves your skin drier
Hyaluronic acid is in almost every serum, which has made it feel self-evident. Yet you keep hearing the same story: someone buys a hyaluronic acid serum, uses it faithfully, and ends up with drier, tighter skin in winter than before.
That is not a bad product and not bad skin. It is how a humectant works, and once you understand it you know immediately what to do differently.
What hyaluronic acid is
Hyaluronic acid is not an acid in the exfoliating sense. It is a sugar molecule your body makes itself, and a lot of it sits in your skin, holding water between the cells. That water is what gives young skin its bounce.
You will have seen the claim that one molecule binds up to a thousand times its own weight in water. That was measured in a lab, under conditions nothing like a face. The scale is right, though: it is one of the strongest humectants there is.
The point that almost never gets made
A humectant attracts water. The question that actually matters is: from where?
When the air is humid enough, hyaluronic acid draws moisture from the air and from whatever you applied underneath it. In dry air there is little to be had outside, and it can then pull water from the deeper layers of your own skin up to the surface, where it evaporates. The result is skin that feels tighter than before you started.
Two practical rules follow, and both are simple:
- Apply it to damp skin. Straight after cleansing, while your face is still wet. Then it has water to bind to immediately.
- Always seal it. A moisturiser on top holds the attracted moisture in place. Hyaluronic acid alone, on dry skin, in a dry room, is the setup where it works against you.
This is also why the instructions for our serum tell you to apply it while you are still in the bathroom. There is a reason it says that.
Molecular weight: why it is not on the label
An INCI list says "Sodium Hyaluronate", and that is all. The list makes no distinction between molecular sizes, while that size determines where it ends up.

A formula with only large molecules feels good but stays on the surface. Only small molecules and you miss that protective layer. The combination does both. None of this is readable from the ingredient list, so it is a question to put to the maker.
Hyaluronic acid alone is not enough
Attracting moisture is half the work. Keeping it in is the other half, and other ingredients do that: barrier lipids like ceramides, emollients like squalane, and ingredients that help skin hold on to water by itself.
That is how Hydration Hero is built. Two misunderstandings
It is not the same as a filler
Injectable hyaluronic acid is placed under the skin and creates volume there. What you apply on top does not reach that layer and therefore does not do that. The plumping effect of a serum is hydration in the upper layers: genuinely visible, but temporary and superficial. Anyone expecting the first and buying the second is disappointed without anything being wrong with the product.
Dry skin and dehydrated skin are not the same
Dry skin produces too little sebum and lacks oil. Dehydrated skin lacks water, and that can happen to oily skin just as easily. Hyaluronic acid solves the second. For the first you also need lipids. If your skin feels tight but you still see shine in the T-zone, that is usually dehydration.
When it will not do much for you
- In dry air with nothing sealing it. Planes, air conditioning, frost: without a moisturiser on top it will work against you.
- On a damaged barrier. If your skin feels raw or stinging, repair with lipids is more urgent than hydration.
- As a replacement for a cream. A watery serum is a step, not a routine.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use hyaluronic acid every day?
Yes, morning and evening. It is not an active you need to build tolerance to and it does not conflict with retinol, vitamin C or acids. If anything it makes those easier to tolerate.
Why does my skin feel tighter since I started using it?
Almost always one of three things: you are applying it to dry skin, you are not sealing it with a moisturiser, or the air around you is very dry. Change those before concluding the product does not work.
How long before I see something?
The immediate effect, fuller and smoother skin, shows within minutes. Skin drying out less over the course of the day takes weeks of consistent use, because your barrier needs that time.
Do I need it if I have oily skin?
Quite possibly yes. Oily skin is often dehydrated, and a light watery layer is more comfortable then than a rich cream.
