City, screen and office: what your skin actually notices

Commute, eight hours in an air-conditioned office, a screen for most of them, commute back. Three things usually get blamed for what that does to your skin: pollution, blue light and dry air.

Two of those hold up. One is among the most oversold claims in skincare, and it is worth knowing which is which before you buy anything for it.

Pollution: real, and it settles

Particulate matter, the fraction small enough to be called PM2.5, along with ozone and nitrogen oxides, lands on your skin and stays there. Those particles generate free radicals on the surface, which contributes to oxidative stress, collagen breakdown and pigment formation.

The evidence here is decent. Population research has linked traffic-related particulate exposure to more pigment spots and deeper lines, independently of sun exposure.

What makes it worse is that pollution and UV amplify each other. Together they produce more oxidative load than you would get from adding the two separately, which is why an antioxidant in the morning is worth having alongside your SPF rather than instead of it.

Blue light from screens: mostly not

This is the one to be sceptical about, and it goes against a good deal of marketing.

Visible light does affect skin. High-energy visible light can trigger pigmentation, particularly in deeper skin tones. That much is established. The question is the dose.

Research measuring what devices actually emit found the levels small and unlikely to be harmful to skin. For context, the exposure associated with blue-light pigmentation is in the region of 90 joules per square centimetre. A phone or a monitor does not come close over a working day.

The sun does. Sunlight is the overwhelming source of visible light reaching your face, by a wide margin, including the light coming through the window you are sitting next to.

So blue light is worth taking seriously, and your monitor is not where it comes from. The practical answer is the same either way, which is probably why the claim persists: wear SPF and use an antioxidant. Those two cover it, whether the light arrives from a screen or a window.

The window is the part people miss

Ordinary glass blocks almost all UVB and lets a good share of UVA through. UVA is the wavelength that reaches deeper and works on collagen and pigment. So a desk by a window, or a daily commute in a car or train, is genuine cumulative exposure without any sunburn to warn you about it.

Air conditioning: real, and easy to fix

Conditioned air is dried air. Eight hours in it pulls water out of your skin faster than your barrier replaces it, which is the tight feeling by mid-afternoon and the flaking that appears in winter when heating is added on top.

The trap is the same as on a plane: a hydrating serum on its own, in dry air, can pull moisture up from deeper skin and lose it. Always seal it with something containing lipids. The article on ceramides explains why that layer matters.

What actually helps

  1. Antioxidant in the morning. This is where pollution is addressed, before the exposure rather than after it.
  2. SPF, every day, window or not.
  3. Seal your hydration. Humectants plus lipids, not humectants alone.
  4. Cleanse in the evening. This is the step that removes the day's deposits along with sebum and SPF. Morning water is often enough; the evening cleanse is the one that matters here.

What does not help: a product that claims only to form an anti-pollution barrier. Cleansing removes what settled, and an antioxidant handles what it generated. Those two are the mechanism.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special anti-pollution product?

No. A cleanser that removes what settled and an antioxidant that handles the free radicals cover it. Anti-pollution as a category is largely a repackaging of those two.

Should I use blue-light glasses or a screen filter for my skin?

For your skin there is no good reason to. For eye comfort that is a separate question with a different answer.

Why does my skin get oily by lunchtime in the office?

Sebum production peaks around midday, and dry air can push skin to produce more. Blotting is a better response than washing again, because cleansing mid-day strips lipids you need.

Is a humidifier at my desk worth it?

It helps if the office is genuinely dry, though a small unit does little in a large room. Sealing your hydration properly does more for less.
