Airless or not: what packaging does to your skincare

A vitamin C serum that has turned orange after two months. A retinol that seems to do less than it did in the first weeks. Usually that is not the formula but the jar or bottle around it, and the fact that air gets in every day.

Packaging is the dullest side of skincare and at the same time the side that decides whether you still get what you paid for in month three. Below: what happens inside the different container types, and why not every product needs the same protection.

Three ways to package a cream

The jar

Cosmetically appealing, hygienically the weakest. Every time you go in with your fingers you introduce skin flora and whatever else was on your hands. On top of that, the entire surface is exposed to air each time you open it. For a thick body butter that hardly matters. For a formula with actives it does.

The pump with a dip tube

Looks like the solution, and is only half of one. An ordinary pump bottle has a thin tube running to the bottom. When you pump product up, something has to take its place: air, drawn into the bottle, where it sits in contact with what is left. Every pump is a small injection of air.

The second drawback shows up at the end: the tube does not reach the last layer on the bottom. What stays there is not coming out without breaking the bottle open.

The airless pump

No tube, but a piston or a flexible membrane at the base. When you pump, negative pressure builds and that piston travels up a little, pushing product out through the opening. No air has to come in to replace the volume, because the volume simply shrinks with it.

Compare it to a syringe: the contents go out without anything flowing back. You can see it happening, because the piston visibly climbs as the bottle empties.

Why air is a problem

Oxygen breaks down exactly the ingredients you buy a serum for. Vitamin C is the clearest example because you can watch it: oxidised ascorbic acid turns yellow first and then orange-brown. Retinol and peptides are just as sensitive but do not change colour, so there you only notice it in the absence of results.

Light and heat speed that up. A clear dropper bottle on the windowsill of a warm bathroom is about the worst combination available.

What about preservatives?

This is where too much gets promised. Every cosmetic product containing water has to be protected against microbial growth in the EU, and packaging does not change that. What does change is the load: a system that no fingers and barely any air get into has less to defend against. That makes a gentler preservative system workable. Not none, gentler.

Why not everything is airless

Airless packaging costs more and not every product needs it. What we have held to is simple: where fragile actives are involved, airless goes around them.

A tube, incidentally, is not a compromise. It deforms as you squeeze, so little air is drawn in, and your fingers never enter the product. For a cleanser that sits on your skin for thirty seconds and then goes down the drain, that is plenty. Putting it in airless would raise the price without giving you anything back.

What it gets you in practice

  • You get what is in there. A dip-tube pump always leaves a layer at the bottom. A piston pushes nearly all of it up.
  • The dose stays consistent. Every pump gives the same amount, including when the bottle is nearly empty. That makes it easier to know how much you are using, which matters most with SPF.
  • It travels better. No air expanding with pressure changes, no open jar in a washbag.

What you can do yourself

Packaging does half the work, storage the other half. Keep active products out of direct sunlight and away from the shower, because temperature swings do more harm than people think. Screw the cap on properly. And check the open-jar symbol on the package: the number followed by an M is how many months the product stays good after opening.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether something is a real airless pump?

See whether a piston visibly climbs, or shake the bottle: an airless system does not slosh, because there is no air bubble inside. If you can see a thin tube through the opening, it is an ordinary pump.

Is my vitamin C still good if it is pale yellow?

Pale yellow is normal. Clearly orange or brown means oxidised. At that point it not only does less, it can irritate the skin.

Does airless mean there are no preservatives?

No. Every water-containing cosmetic needs preservation. The packaging makes it possible to keep that system gentle.

Can I refill an airless bottle?

Usually not. The piston cannot travel back without breaking the vacuum, which is exactly what the packaging exists to prevent.
